A few weeks ago I enjoyed a weekend in a sleeper shack on Mille Lacs Lake. We rented the Premiere Ice Cabin from Dean and Sue Hanson at Agate Bay Resort. It was our group's second time staying at their resort. The first time we were plagued by an extreme cold front which made us give it another shot this year, thinking the weather played a role in the fish activity. This year we were greeted again by another cold front, but nothing too extreme. This time we unfortunately marked, and caught, fewer fish than the previous year. We did, however, land fish over 24" on both trips. The cabin is a 10 out of 10 on a comfort scale, which also played a role in deciding to come back this year. The one we rented was equipped with 10 holes, rattle wheels, comfortable bunk beds, a propane stove top, a microwave, and satellite TV. Each of the Premiere Ice Cabins also comes with it's own heated port-a-potty shack just feet from the front door. One thing I have found interesting is that their Facebook page shares quite a few photos of nice fish, but not many actually in their own rental shacks. If you are looking to rent a shack for the first time or are looking to bring your family on the ice for a comfortable weekend of fishing I would not hesitate to recommend Agate Bay Resort. Tight Lines!

Last year was our group's first year staying at Agate Bay Resort on Mille Lacs Lake. I called Dean in early October and reserved one of the Premiere Ice Cabins for mid-January. The weather made fishing tough as we had a major front push through the first night we were there. High temps below 0 and sustained winds of 30 mph does not make for good fishing. Dean and his team worked hard to put us on fish, ultimately having us change cabins after a slow first night. Most fish came during the "typical" bite windows around sunset and sunrise. For those of you who don't know, the best part of a sleeper shack is fishing while you sleep with the use of rattle wheels. The cabins are outfitted with one wheel per hole which are set up before you arrive. (I can almost hear the bells jingling as I write this.) The resort's website does not do justice for the level of comfort these shacks provide. I have been in many sleeper shack rentals and nothing comes close to these. The Premiere Ice Cabins come with satellite TV, a built-in cook top, a huge bay window for watching tip-ups, and a heated porta-potty just feet from the door. Bring your own gear or you can rent gear from the resort for a small fee. If you are interested in fishing a trophy walleye lake through the ice I would strongly suggest giving Agate Bay Resort a call. Last week my wife and I went on an outstanding musky trip with Scott Kieper in northern Wisconsin. Scott is an over-the-top musky fanatic who stops at nothing to put fish in the boat. He guides almost exclusively for musky during the summer months, but also chases other species in the off season. He provides all the gear necessary to fish, all you have to do is show up! Check out the blog I wrote about our day and if you give him a call be sure to leave a message, because he's probably out fishing.
